A quality sump pump typically lasts 7 to 10 years with proper maintenance. We recommend testing your pump regularly and replacing it before it fails.

We strongly recommend battery backup for all sump pump installations. Power outages often coincide with heavy storms when your pump is needed most.

Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float lifts: the pump should switch on, empty the pit and shut off by itself. While you are there, make sure the discharge line is clear and not frozen in winter, clear any gravel or debris out of the pit so it cannot jam the float, and if you have a battery backup, unplug the main pump to confirm the backup takes over. Backup batteries generally need replacing every two to three years — check the manufacturer's figure.

Unusual noises, short rapid cycling, running nonstop, or simply age — most pumps last seven to ten years. A pump that fails does it in a storm, so replacing an old one on your schedule is far cheaper than finding out during the next heavy rain.
